Rust Freelox

Pentarch of Revelation

Rust Freelox

Identity & Role

  • Name: Rust Freelox (he/him)
  • Ancestry: Goblin
  • Age: 13
  • Class: Life Oracle, with the Beastmaster's bond — his wolf companion, Dog
  • Pentarchy Seat: Revelation
  • Council Office: Counselor, accepted at the founding of Athanor on Founding Day
  • Standing: The conscience of the council on questions of equality and protection. When the Pentarchy debates who belongs in Athanor, the answer tends to arrive in his voice.

Background

  • Rust was orphaned in the Goblinblood Wars, his parents killed near their very start. He was scooped up as an infant by a passing Hellknight and raised a slave among Asmodean devil-worshippers — an order of iron sisters he names, uncertainly, the Golden Erinyes. It was a place where a hungry goblin child learned very young that you asked a devil, politely, for your bread.
  • He clawed free of every part of that. He arrived in Restov because a letter came and he had nowhere better to be, and he has never entirely stopped expecting the arrangement to be withdrawn.
  • He carries a symbol of Lamashtu the way a man carries the accent of the country he left — culturally, without submission. He does not kneel to powers. He has met one.
  • What most marks him is not the history but his reaction to having escaped it: he sits at a council table as a full and equal ruler of a nation, and it still visibly startles him.

"I've been schlepping it on my own for so long… it still confounds me — not to be looked down upon."

  • Elroy Jenkins saw the mirror at once. The two of them are cut from the same rough cloth — two souls unused to being shown respect — and it is very often the booming General who makes certain that the small, steady goblin is heard.

Appearance & Manner

  • Look: The smallest of the company by a wide margin. A ridiculous top hat that somehow suits him. Robes that have been bled through and mended more than once. Hands that are always doing something.
  • Presence: He wears a healer's worry like a coat two sizes too large. In camp he checks footing and pulses by habit, without being asked and usually without being noticed.
  • Manner: Plainspoken to the point of bluntness, and funnier than he lets on. He deploys small jokes the way he deploys bandages — to stop something getting worse.
  • The tell: Under real feeling, his Common deserts him and he drops entirely into Goblin without noticing. It has cost him. It cost the kingdom once.

Voice Guide

  • Tone: Steady healer's calm. Short sentences. Warmth without sentiment. He talks to the wounded the way you talk to a spooked animal — low, level, unhurried.
  • Diction cues: "Easy now…" / "Hold still — this'll warm you right up." / "I've got you."
  • Under pressure he gets drier, not louder. Bleeding through his robes, held upright by will alone, with a cannibal promising to wear his skin, what he said was:

"My skin won't fit you."

  • On governance, he is the one who remembers the dead by name and insists the masons carve them into the stonework — Oleg on everything, "so he's immortalized in ways he never wanted"; Davik Nettle's name on the bridge that took three attempts to build.
  • With Dog he is unguarded in a way he is with no one else: "Let's show them who the real beastmaster is."

Signature Tools & Tactics

  • Position: He works from the edge of the fight, always, with Dog pressed to his side — close enough to reach anyone who falls, far enough to keep his sightlines. He has spent more of his short life on the wrong side of a battle than any goblin in the Stolen Lands has a right to, and it shows in where he chooses to stand.
  • Healing: His hands flare greenish-gold and warmth goes out of them — sometimes into one body at contact, sometimes as a tide that finds every wound within reach at once. When someone is losing the argument with injury, what comes out of him is not gentle: it is urgent, pressurised, life pushed into a body that has stopped accepting it.
  • Between fights he is a field medic before he is a mystic — patient, careful work with a healer's roll of tools, closing what magic did not reach.
  • Offence: Slivers of cold iron, called out of the air and sent in volleys. Shafts of cold moonlight. A keening, discordant cry raised in his own harsh tongue that leaves enemies reeling. Against the faithful he can turn a god's silence into doubt.
  • The dogslicer rides at his hip and is almost never drawn. On the rare occasion he has resorted to it, it has landed with a decisiveness that surprised everyone including him.
  • Warding: He lays protection against fire and cold over whoever is about to need it, and draws a shell of borrowed vitality over his own small frame before the shouting starts.

Dog

  • A wolf, bonded to him, and the second-best-loved figure at the council table. He was formally appointed Treasurer of Athanor as a joke on Founding Day, held the post with no evident awareness of it, and was quietly relieved of it a season later.
  • Rust fights through him as much as beside him — a clipped command sends the wolf to a flank, and the jaws land where the flank matters most. On wet ground Rust simply climbs onto Dog's back and lets the wolf do the wading, keeping his own boots dry with complete dignity.
  • He bought Dog a small worked wand so the animal would never go hungry again regardless of what the wilderness provided. This is the most direct statement about his childhood he has ever made out loud.
  • When a leucrotta pack learned to steal voices and one of them called to Dog in Rust's own voice, telling him to come, the wolf refused — lip curled, telling the thing in its own way exactly what it could do with the invitation. It tried twice.

Notable Deeds

  • The reason the others are alive. Across the campaign he has dragged Elroy back from the black edge more times than the record cleanly counts, held Dravyn together through wounds that should have been fatal, and been named by common acknowledgment as the sole reason the party survived more than one night.
  • The dragon in the marsh. When a young black dragon began preying on goblin communities along Athanor's eastern reaches — livestock gone, a camp burned, three goblins missing — it was not an administrative matter to him. It was personal. The Pentarchs rode out together.
  • The speech that failed. Demagogues moved through Stormfire Reach turning citizens against people who looked like him, and he stepped forward to answer them himself — the goblin at the centre of the kingdom, sovereign authority, unimpeachable standing, absolute sincerity. He spoke passionately and at length before realising he had slipped entirely into Goblin. He tried again. It happened again. The crowd's confusion curdled, unrest flared through the capital in two waves, and the granary paid for it. It is the most human thing in his record and he has never once made an excuse for it.
  • The fire at the Empty Space. Asked by the others for a word of counsel before a morning that might kill them, he gave it plainly and without hedging. They have asked him since.

Relationships

  • Elroy Jenkins — the closest bond in the company. Elroy amplifies him at the table; he keeps Elroy breathing in the field. Neither has ever said so directly.
  • Perry Marlowe — mutual professional regard. Perry's assessments and Rust's triage are the two halves of the same instinct.
  • Dravyn — he has spent more magic on Dravyn's survival than on anyone's but Elroy's.
  • Grotdor — twice dragged back from the edge by Rust, a fact Grotdor does not mention and does not forget.
  • Dog — see above. Not a relationship he would describe as ownership.
