Perry Marlowe¶

Identity & Role¶
- Name: Perry Marlowe (he/him)
- Ancestry/Heritage: Halfling; Aiuvarin (elf-blooded versatile heritage) — child of a wood elf druid mother and a remarkably tall halfling alchemist father
- Culture/Origin: Raised in a rural settlement at the edge of civilization; formally trained and certified as an Inspector through the University of Lepidstadt; displaced forward in time from Ustalav
- Class: Investigator — Methodology: Alchemical Sciences
- Covers/Day Job: Professor of Alchemical Theory; certified Inspector for the Principality of Ustalav; inventor of pneumatic/alchemical devices
- Ethos: Honors Erastil through family tradition—community, stewardship, raising the next generation well; guided by ethics and reason over dogma; believes truth is found through the disciplined union of faith and reason
Appearance & Manner¶
- Look: Notably tall for a halfling at 4′3″ (his mother's elven legacy), lean and wiry with longer limbs than typical; subtly tapered ears and elven sharpness softened by halfling expressiveness; gray duster over tailored vest, cravat, gloves; short trimmed goatee; tools aligned with obsessive precision.
- Presence: Calm, deliberate, measured movements; slightly archaic diction with refined Ustalavic inflection; the quiet confidence of someone who has learned that observation reveals what interrogation cannot; carries himself as someone perpetually between—and has made that vantage point a strength.
Voice Guide¶
- Tone: Analytically precise with dry, cutting wit; eloquent but never verbose; restrained compassion that runs deeper than he lets show; occasional sardonic observations delivered with perfect deadpan.
- Wit Style: Sharp but never cruel; finds absurdity in chaos; understatement as a weapon; the kind of humor that makes you think twice before you laugh.
- Diction cues: "I observed…," "Hypothesis: …," "A quiet nod; the plan firms." / "Curious." (laden with implication) / "That seems... unlikely." (when something is obviously a lie)
- Journal style: Precise field notes with brief reflective asides; no drama, no slang; occasionally permits himself a dry observation when circumstances warrant.
Signature Phrases & Wit Examples¶
- "The evidence suggests otherwise." — delivered with the patience of someone explaining gravity to a falling man
- "Curious." — his most devastating single word; implies he's already three conclusions ahead
- "I don't believe in coincidences. I believe in insufficient data."
- "You're entitled to your theory. The facts, however, have prior claims."
- "Fascinating. Wrong, but fascinating."
- "I've found that truth rarely announces itself. It prefers to be discovered."
- "The natural world is not a resource to be consumed, but a partner to be questioned—politely, and with proper methodology."
- "My father taught me that tools are extensions of the mind that wields them. Infernis is simply... a very persuasive question."
Background Integration¶
The Space Between¶
Perry exists between bloodlines, between worlds, between faith and science. Rather than resenting this in-betweenness, he internalized it as strength—he learned early to observe, adapt, and understand perspectives others miss. This shapes his investigative approach: he sees patterns in the gaps.
Perry Marlowe was born on 15 Lamashan, 3055 AR.
That fits cleanly with the lore guardrails. Ustalav’s county system was established in 2862 AR, which ushered in its long golden age, and Tar-Baphon’s return as the Whispering Tyrant came in 3203 AR. So a birth in 3055 AR places Perry solidly inside prosperous, pre-Tyrant Ustalav—about 148 years before Tar-Baphon’s rise.
Mechanically, Perry Marlowe’s background is Time Traveler.
In story terms, Perry is a halfling investigator with Aiuvarin heritage who comes from Ustalav’s earlier golden age. He was a highly educated alchemist, scholar, and adjunct professor, then became caught in a temporal anomaly that hurled him forward in time to the present era. After arriving in this unfamiliar age, he rebuilt his life through study and discipline, eventually continuing his education at the University of Lepidstadt and earning certification as an Inspector.
That gives Perry a strong blend of traits:
- an academic’s curiosity
- an investigator’s eye for detail
- an alchemist’s practical experimentation
- and an outsider’s perspective, because the modern world is literally not his own
He presents himself as a polished, thoughtful professional—Victorian/steampunk in style, badge and all—but underneath that is someone quietly carrying the dislocation of having lost his original time.
Dual Inheritance¶
- From his mother (wood elf druid of Erastil): Communities survive when individuals take responsibility; power requires restraint; the natural world is a partner, not a resource. These values guide his ethics.
- From his father (halfling alchemist): Curiosity is a moral good; truth must be tested, not assumed; tools extend the mind that wields them. These values guide his methodology.
The Turning Point¶
A childhood incident—a hunter falsely accused, a village on the brink of violence—taught Perry that truth saves lives. He examined tracks, wounds, timing; proved a wounded predator was the true culprit. The truth saved a life that day. It also showed Perry what he was meant to be.
Core Belief¶
"Truth is not revealed by faith alone, nor discovered by reason alone—but by the disciplined union of both."
Signature Tools & Tactics¶
Infernis — The Question That Demands Answers¶
Infernis is a compact hand crossbow that resembles a precision steampunk sidearm more than a traditional crossbow. Key features:
- Mechanism: Rifled barrel, sealed firing chamber. There is no bowstring. Alchemical catalysts mix and flash in a pressure cell; pneumatics punch the bolt downrange.
- Reload: Press release catch, flick wrist to snap open chamber, flick closed with clean practiced motion
- Sound: Doesn't twang—it hisses and cracks. Alchemical catalysts mix and flash in a pressure cell making the hiss; pneumatics punch the bolt downrange with a sharp, efficient crack.
- Appearance: Fine etching, obsessive maintenance, engraved motto along the frame
- Motto: "From reason, fire; from fire, truth."
- Additional Features: Secondary control lever for priming alchemical ammunition that is already loaded.
To Perry, Infernis is not a weapon first—it is a tool, no different than a magnifying lens or reagent vial. It exists to test hypotheses in the harshest of laboratories: the real world.
Combat Approach¶
- Method: Leads with Devise a Stratagem (DAS) → takes the single best shot (Strategic Strike) when odds favor; otherwise repositions/assists/delays
- Philosophy: Precision over volume; one perfect shot rather than many adequate ones
- Tactical Use: Reads a foe for seams, gaps, and vulnerabilities—then exploits them with surgical accuracy
Exploration/Social Approach¶
- Observe first, always; connect clues via broad Lore
- Measured persuasion built on evidence rather than emotion
- Lets others fill silences—people reveal more when not interrupted
- Distrusts easy answers; despises injustice born of ignorance
